It seems I am allergic to staying in one place these days. This weekend I crossed the mason-dixon again for some family fun and ended up going to Mount Vernon. Photos weren't allowed but I snuck some for you cause we're good like that.
I grew up fed a strict diet of historical sites. Jamestown, Williamsburg, Old Saint Mary's, Fort Ticonderoga, Gettysburg, Canterbury Shaker Village- you name it, I conquered it. Years have passed since I've been in full form and gosh, it's good to be home.

ReplyDeleteDitto re. American historical sites being a staple of childhood. My mother used to threaten to drop us off at Sabbath Day Lake (the last living Shaker settlement c. the early nineties) if we weren't well-behaved little mongrels.

ReplyDeleteNice. I grew up on the east coast, in Boston, Baltimore, and DC. Mt Vernon is a treasure. Glad you got some cool shots without getting thrown in the dungeon.
ReplyDeleteI live five minutes from Mt. Vernon on the George Washington parkway. I absolutely love it there. George sure did know how to pick some real estate.

ReplyDeleteOh yea, I was raised the same way. I think I've been to every fort with 400 miles of New Orleans and we definitely hit up the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill a few times.
ReplyDeleteHa! I make fun of my husband for wanting to go to Williamsburg, because I think it's just a big tourist trap. Once I planned to take him there as a surprise, and found out what local hotels are charging.... I was right, it's a tourist trap! He'll have to make do with the local venue, Old Bethpage Village.

that delicate sugar bowl is so lovely! visiting those kind museums here in germany always makes me so sad, rural live seems to have been so brutal in our poor area here. i´m always happy that i can leave those miserable houses behind me.

ReplyDeleteMy sister and I were just commenting on how most of what we learned growing up was on summer break at the historical sites our family brought us to! And still, to this day, we seek them out. I like your sneeky photos very much :)
ReplyDeleteMount Vernon is a great sneaky photo snapping spot. They occasionally offer tours that take you into the cellar of the main house and to a few secret spots around the property where you are allowed to take photos - very worth the few extra bucks!
